THE PRECIOUS COMMODITY

VT IN potable water continues to be a major challenge to residents of manchie and korleman, communities in the ga west municipal area. despite the provision of three mechanized boreholes, residents have resorted to stream water  as water flowing  from the boreholes are coloured and salty. daniel lartey's  report Wait for cue V/O trebra flows through manchie, a village about 23 kilometres away from accra. residence have to walk a long distance to fetch water from it. though they claim it is clean they admit it might be dangerous for drinking. snd up water from the trebrah stream is used their domestic needs.   they claim trebrah is the last resort since water from the boreholes are unclean and salty. sot this is one of the functioning boreholes but the quality is doubted by residents. snd  up this borehole has been dysfunctional for six years and residents lament, several efforts to get the authorities to repair

EARNING A LIVING

VT IN It  is certainly not a life for everyone, but obuaba asamani, a fisherman has to commit to the life he has chosen to earn a living from the sea. daniel lartey interacted with him and has this story.  wait for cue V/O the ways on the sea are not new to him. Inheriting the profession from his father, obuaba, has continued the family business for over 19 years. he lives in anyaman, a fishing village on the coast of sege, in the ada west municipality. 33 year old obuaba  is a father to eleven children and a wife, and fishing is all he has ever done to cater for his family. his strength lies in the numerous neighbours who chant songs to row back his canoe to shore. snd up after nine hours of hard work, his catch leaves him with an emotional anguish. but he is not alone in this, families who await him to sort out the fish also express disappointment. he provides employment for the women in the village who return with empty pans w

ADEISO SAND WINING

BAD ROAD

TOILET MENACE

VT parts of lashibi-emefs estate has been soaked up in stench from the improper disposal of human excreta around the area. daniel lartey visited the community and reports, the bad odour is causing discomfort to residents. Wait for cue  V/O according to residents, operators of septic tanks dispose off  human excreta indiscriminately in the area. the area has since been smothered with an unpleasant pungent smell. although the tema metropolitan assembly responded by blocking the route to the spot, operators, we gathered had devised other access routes. sot they fear severe health problems. s o t residents appealed to authorities to impose sanctions on perpatrators. end

BUI PT. THREE

VT as ghana awaits the first power supply from the bui dam, the reservoir formed by the dam is being hailed for its impact on the livelihood of the people within the catchment area. they claim the reservior has boosted fishing activities in the area. daniel lartey brings us this report.  WAIT FOR CUE V/O It covers an area of 444 square kilometers at full supply level. The water level at the time of our visit stood at 169.83 meters. Managers of the dam, expect the level to rise to 183 meters in a good year. The development of the bui dam on the black volta was primarily for hydro electric power and the development of an irrigation system. The reservoir formed has since enhanced eco tourism and fisheries in the area. BUI PART TWO

VT meanwhile, transmission lines installed to evacuate power generated from the bui hydro power dam to a gridco substation at kintampo for  the generation of 133 mega watts of energy is complete. daniel lartey, again.  WAIT FOR CUE V/O construction works on the switchyard and control building is nearing completion. power generation set in the left bank power station has been connected to four transmission lines. workers were busily putting finishing touches to other transmission lines except, the bui kintampo line which is fully installed. we followed to the diversion point of all four lines heading to sawla, techiman, kintampo and sunyani. the bui  to kintampo transmission lines is expected to augment the national grid with a 133 megawatts of power. it stretches from the bui dam site through the outskirt of kintampo township and eventually ends at a gridco substation also at kintampo. according to engineers, the line will reinforce the gr

BUI PART ONE

VT trail tests have began on the generation of first power from the bui hydro electric power project. In this report, daniel lartey, highlights preparations towards the evacuation of 133 megawatts of power by the end of april 2013. Wait for cue V/O construction works at the bui hydro electric power dam are nearing completion. workers are currently busy fixing parts on the  components which will generate the first 133 megawatts of energy. the power house overhead bridge crane which can lift 360 tonnes of load was in operation. the turbine for the 133 generator has been assembled the turbine area has been cordoned off with wooden bars and only authorized workers were allowed to enter. the turbine floor, containing the turbine arrangements was also ready.  Installation of drainage pumps, cooler and water treatment plant were all complete Several control panels for the first generation have been lined adjacent the turbine area. we gath

TIME WITH GRANNI

VT there seems to be no end in sight to the current water crisis. tv3's daniel lartey caught up with 90 year old   kaa kwabla adjetey, who struggles daily to access one of life's essentials. wait for cue V/O it is 7:30am, kaa kwabla adjetey  has just woken up. snd up... praying. she has spent all her life in teshie corner stone, a community dried out from lack of water supply. at 90, she still likes to do things on her own. when receptacles are empty, she makes her way to the tap to see if by some stroke of luck, water could be flowing. SND UP she's become used to falling and tripping. fortunately,  her great grand son,  ebernezer adjetey pays her a visit. she quickly pleads with him to help her out with a gallon of water,  which sells at a very exorbitant price. snd up after several minutes, he returns with a half gallon of water. painstakingly she journeys to the communal bath house. snd up..

N1 REGULATIONS

SANITATION AT ANYAMAM

VT through communal labour, residents of anyamam, in the ada west municipality, fight sanitation in the area, oblivious of the negative effects their method of disposing of the waste they collect would have on them. daniel lartey has this report wait for cue  V/O anyaman is a fishing village on the coast of sege. the village is divided by the songor lagoon and residence once depended on it for commercial production of  tilapia. they make income by transporting the excess fish to neighbouring communities. through the improper dumping of waste around the lagoon, residents lament aquatic life has been negatively affected as evidenced in the low catch they have to content with lately. although some have decided to clear and burn the rubbish through communal labour, they leave the debris just around the lake. samuel okutu, a resident said they barely make a good catch and appealed for litter bins for the community. JYANKRO NEEDS HELP

VT IN  they walk long distances to acquire tution in preparation towards this year's  basic education certificate examination. the news team visited jyankrom in the gomoa west district of the central region and reports, jhs 3 students attend classes in another town due to inadequate  classrooms. wait for cue  V/O  jyankro has water, electricity and a school. but  inadequate classrooms at the only basic school is posing a serious challenge to students. these rooms serve as classrooms for jhs one and two. but there is none for jhs three. sot                the only way to get tution in preparing for the basic education certificate examination is by treking to gomoa mprumem, a nearby village. sot Sot we followed the students to the school and met their the headmaster,,albert eshun sot he said, students are compelled to lodge with  friends in order to make time for early  morning classes. sot children of school
