LET'S DONATE MORE BLOOD

               LETS DONATE MORE BLOOD
Blood donation is very important in maintaining Ghana's
workforce and vibrant economy.

The oxford advance learners dictionary defined the blood
donor as a person who gives some of his or her blood to be
used in the medical treatment of another people.

Unfortunately there are no adequate voluntary donors and
this have caused the National Blood Bank(NBB)  which
supplies blood to families in order to save live to run out
of stock.

News of shortages of blood at the Korle-bu Teaching
Hospital in Accra and recently the Konfo Anokye Teaching
Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has only come to serve as a
warning to the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) to
sit up and put in place an efficient blood collection and
processing strategies to bring this problem to an end.

I believe the shortages should also serve as an alarm for
all potential donors to donate blood when we are not sick.
All one has to do is to bring a donors identity card anytime
he finds himself in need of blood.

Research indicate that the center needs  up to about
250,000 units of blood but currently there is only 300 units
which is hindering access to health care to patience
especially those undergoing surgical operations.
This has caused what has now been a normality for doctors
to ask patience who undergo surgical operations and it's
related cases to look for donors before such activities can
be carried out and I need not mention that some patience have lost their
lives in the process of securing a donor> Blood is not sold and the
ideal thing to do in saving life is to donate one.

This humanitarian activity has been the source of joy for
many people who might have died by now. However the notion
that regular donation of blood weakens the donor or lead to
impotency or even hastens his or her aging process is not
true.

As patriotic citizens who want to play active roles in the
society, it is a responsibility; and donating blood to save
lives is one of them.
The increase in the downwards trend in voluntary blood
donation, the needed priority to building up a low risk
population growth as well as converting families replacement
donors to non remunerated donors is a social part we all
have to play.

The youth should be motivated to enroll into the blood
donation register by incorporating interest boosting
activities into the blood donation education.

The government can support the National blood donor program
and establish the blood transfusion centers at the Teaching
Hospitals in Kumasi and Accra as stipulated in the 2011
budget statement and economic policy and other minor
hospitals to help boost blood supply.
