SENSITIZE WA TO THE USE OF CRASH HELMET

SENSITIZE WA TO THE USE OF CRASH HELMET

Wa is the capital town of the Upper West region of Ghana.
Motorcycle has been the predominant means of transportation by the inhabitants as about 90 percent of the populace both young and old can boast of a motorbike.

I visited the region and I realized that vehicles are minimal and one can only dodge the exorbitant fares charged by taxi drivers who will be willing to ply roads which vehicles won't pursue by purchasing a motorbike. The use of the motor bike is indeed making transportation very flexible.

The problem however is that most of these motorcyclists and the persons they carry do not wear crash helmets. They have ignored completely the need for a crash helmet putting their lives and those they carry on the bike in danger.
Some of the inhabitants admitted the importance of a crash helmet but sees it as an unnecessary cost since after all, they can ride their bikes to their destinations without a helmet.  A friend who took me round however revealed that, quite a good number of the riders have the crash helmet in their homes but sees it as an additional load and will only bring it out on a tip-off of police check.

The safety of these riders seem not important to them and I dare not blame this negligence on ignorance, as implications associated with the  refusal to wear crash helmet is very visible upon the numerous campaign programs designed by the National Road Safety Commission to sensitize the public about  motor accidents on our screens. We can take a cue from the campaign on television when a water melon was left from a story building to splash on the floor as a perfect way of spelling the doom of riding without a crash helmet.

The situation is more horrifying when children sit behind their riders to a distance.
The law requires all motorcyclists to wear crash helmets. Ignorance of the law should not be an excuse and the fact that some of these riders wear their crash helmet on a prompt of police check shows the offense is deliberately committed.
It is true that there are a few cars in the Wa Township. It is also true that the importance of motorcycle I this situation cannot be over emphasized but the right deed should be done.

I therefore beckon the Wa Police service to focus on this live threatening act and develop a plan to get these defaulters to obey the law.
To add, I believe the public can be sensitized during durbars through dramas on the dangers of such act.
