life in old fadama, formerly known as Sodom and Gomorrah, is certainly not ordinary.

Its true population is not known and the slum is  a depressed one.

few steps into the town and you will encounter the korle lagoon, flowing through an open drain.

It is littered with refuse, plastic bags, rubber bottles and cow dung.

children play bare-footed at the water edge.

a jumble of rusted metal roof stretches to the  far east.

we met 30 year old, adam kadri, a scrap dealer who says he has a wife and three children.

he maintains, the slum is not an environment to groom  his three children

accommodation  here is one of survival and make-shift.

renting a kiosk here ranges between twenty and thirty ghana cedis monthly.

tenants have to contend with public bath houses and toilets. and this is done in turns.

power rationing to the vast majority of residents is a major challenge.

usually, the smallest of rooms is occupied by 5 to 10 persons. there is a tv, video player, fan and a stabilizer to protect gargets and other cherished property.

despite this. there are signs of entrepreneurship here.

this is evident in the the large number of thriving small scale businesses.

there are scrap dealers, barbering shops, improvised video theaters, and chemical shops.

some of these businesses make  good income.

we wanted to understand why anyone would live here,  especially in the face of poor  access roads, sanitation, housing and school.

but my barber friend, has an answer.

Sot

despite the depresssed environment , residents continue to work hard to make life  better.
